Lake District · Autumn retreat for two

Woodsmoke, cold dips, and bracken turning copper.

A hand-built shepherd's hut with a woodfired sauna above the pond, open pastureland at the door and weekday hot yoga classes right here on site. September to November is Dolly at her best — a slow, warm retreat for two.

Autumn nights from £102 · Sauna & cold dips included · Weekday hot yoga on site with Hot Yoga Cumbria

Retreat & replenish

A little wilder. A lot more cosy.

Dolly is a slow weekend kind of stay, and autumn is when it comes into its own. Light the sauna as the light goes golden, wander the pastureland for mushrooms, dip in water cold enough to make you laugh out loud, then back to the hut for a kettle on the stove and an early, honest dark. A proper reset — wrapped in a soft duvet.

September — November

Autumn is the best of it.

The season this place was made for: mushrooms coming up across the pastureland, bracken turning copper on the fells, water cold enough to properly wake you up, and a stove that takes the edge off the moment you step in. Come to retreat, replenish, and do very little indeed.

Foraging

Mushroom season

Damp mornings bring the mushrooms up across the pastureland around the hut. Bring a basket, a good guidebook, and take only what you're sure of.

Heat & cold

Sauna & cold dips

Woodfired sauna on the deck, then straight down the ladder into the pond. Autumn water is sharp, honest, and exactly the point.

Weekdays

Hot yoga on site

Weekday hot yoga classes run here at Dolly with Hot Yoga Cumbria — heat, then a cold dip a few steps away, then the stove. No driving anywhere.

Stay midweek and you can string the lot together without leaving the field: hot yoga in the morning, a wander through the pastureland in the afternoon, sauna and a cold dip as it gets dark.

Heat & cold

Woodfired sauna by the pond

Our woodfired sauna sits right on the deck above the natural swimming pond. Stoke the stove, let the spruce warm through, and watch the steam catch the low autumn light through the big glass front.

When you're glowing, step straight out, down the ladder, and into the pond. From September the water has a real bite to it — that's rather the point. Lie on the deck under a big Lakeland sky, then back in for one more round. Slow, restorative, and the reason most people come back.

1

Light the stove

Kindling, kiln-dried logs and matches all provided.

2

Warm through

Pale spruce bench, woodsmoke, big glass view of the fields.

3

Cold dip

Straight off the deck and into the pond. Ladder, not a leap.

4

Wrap up warm

Linen robe, kettle on the stove, blanket, early autumn dark.

Comfort & cosiness

A hand-built shepherd's hut for two.

Dolly is dark-green corrugated tin on the outside, all warm cream panelling and Edison-bulb glow on the inside. There's a proper double bed by the window, a little stove with a red kettle always at the ready, and a wild-swim print over the bed by way of a hint.

Solar-powered and off-grid in feel, but never short on creature comforts — stove lit, spare blankets in the basket, hot water bottles for the small hours and linen robes on the hook. Autumn nights out here are dark and properly quiet, which is rather the appeal.

The setting

Rolling pastureland on the edge of the Lakes.

Sheep next door, open pastureland around the hut, and big skies overhead. Come autumn the bracken turns copper, mushrooms come up across the pastureland, and the light goes gold by four o'clock. Walks from the gate, pubs and tea rooms a short drive, and the lakes themselves a stone's throw away. Bring boots, books, and someone you like a lot.
